I went to the hospital chapel looking for peace.
I didn’t trust anyone there. Not because they were bad people—but because faith, at its deepest, has never come to me through intermediaries. This isn’t a sermon. There’s no music, no altar call, no answers. Just a chapel, a question, and what was left when religious permission finally fell away.
One ordinary morning walk with my wife and dog turned into arrest, humiliation, and years in a prison cell during COVID lockdown. I cried into a pillow at night, fearing I’d never escape the darkness. But in that brokenness, I discovered what real courage means—not bravado, but standing firm when everything screams run. If life’s ever shaken your ground, this reflection is for you. Watch to the end for the simple truth that kept me going: just stay standing.
One morning walk changed everything—arrest for something I didn’t do, strip-search humiliation, prison isolation during COVID. In the darkness of fear and brokenness, I grappled with true courage through Aristotle, Kierkegaard, scripture, and hard reality. If you’ve faced trauma, injustice, or shaking ground, this is for you. Hit play, reflect, and share your story below. Subscribe for more honest reflections on resilience, faith, and growth.
I’m not here to defend anyone.
I’m here to ask a harder question:
do we actually know what fascism is —
or do we just like how it feels
when the crowd says it for us?
This poem was originally written about 2 decades ago, and revisioned today to bring a new layer into it, but much as it was when I first wrote it. It was a period of deep depression that these words speak towards.
Written about two decades ago and slightly modified today to bring better flow and added several lines to make more complete. Triune selves collide in solitude, yet only when the ‘I’ surrenders does the speck of ‘we’ emerge, luminous against the abyss.
Disclaimer: I know I’ve covered this theme before. But recently, I’ve seen it happen again—and badly. Terrible events, people dying, all of it twisted into cheap memes, flattened, politicised, stripped of consequence. It’s exhausting to watch. Complex, tragic circumstances reduced to foolishness that thrives on division, polarisation, and rhetoric designed to degrade rather than illuminate. I’m reiterating this not for novelty, but because the stakes are real. The way we treat wisdom—our guides, our attention—can literally cost lives.
